“I simply can’t build my hopes on a foundation of confusion, misery and death… I think… peace and tranquility will return again.” ~ Anne Frank

Mountains are universal symbols of strength, stability, and closeness to God. Although, they also represent obstacles, most of the time mountains are mentioned in the Bible, something significant is taking place between God and mankind.

Moses received his call on Mount Horeb.

The Law of God was given on Mount Sinai.

Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.

When Jesus faced temptation in the wilderness, it was on an “exceedingly high mountain.”

Jesus often went up the mountain to pray; and this is where he taught the “Sermon on the Mount”

And, of course, the transfiguration took place on a mountain. It was here where Jesus was seen as having preeminence over the Law (Moses) and the Prophets (Elijah).

In Revelation 14:1(NAS) we read, “Then I looked and behold, the Lamb was standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one-hundred and forty-four thousand, having His name and the name of His Father written on their foreheads.” John mentions Mount Zion as a heavenly representation of God’s interaction with his chosen people, Israel. No matter your eschatology, in this passage, Mount Zion is an eternal place where God’s promises are fulfilled. In this sense, Mount Zion is a representation of the Kingdom of God.

That’s the amazing thing about the promises of God. Everything about the Kingdom begins with something tangible then progresses into something spiritually eternal. What do I mean? Follow me here: We are initially born into this world, but then we are reborn into the Kingdom. The law of God was an external expectation given to teach the mankind that we cannot fulfill it in our own strength. It was the teacher that led us to Christ. We no longer live according to the Mosaic Law, but rather by the Spirit who governs us internally. Each of us have been given a work to do during our lifetime that will advance the reality of the Kingdom. But the more we attempt to accomplish that through human means and wisdom, the further away we get from the end goal. Why? Because the end goal requires us to die to ourselves and find our life in Christ. Life abundant is offered to all, but it is found by few. Why? Because it cannot be fulfilled through this world system that is being toppled by an eternal Kingdom governed by Jesus Himself.

This season has shown all of us what it is we truly cling to for stability–what mountain we seek after looking for protection and strength. But, let me encourage you with this–you can go to Israel and find a mountain called Zion, but one day even Zion with all its rich history will be laid low. The physical mountain that was once Zion is now truly found in the heart of believers because eternity has been placed in the hearts of men. That mountain can never be shaken. How do you scale the heights of that mountain? –through obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit. He is always leading us to one place. That is into the presence of the Father through a relationship with the Son.

“You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom, and storm…But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than Able.” Hebrews 12:18-24.

Kingdoms rise and fall, but peace is found in Mount Zion because Jesus rules and reigns throughout the ages. He is the only source of stability. And he is the perfect mountain climbing partner.
